The photo of Ravineel Prasad with his beaten-up and swollen face (FS 12/4) is a disgrace to the Police Force.
Even though the law in Fiji promotes innocent until proven guilty, the police have their own techniques for drawing a confession of guilt from a suspect.
Ravneel’s photo can serve as evidence of police brutality while in custody, which is why the police did not want to record his statement of complaint when he turned up to report his beating.
Sadly, Fijians have the mentality that being beaten up while in police custody is legal and is part of the police questioning and investigation process.
Fijians are grateful to the Fiji Police Force for its overall work performance in Fiji as a whole, but it is cases like this that brings disrepute and possible sacking if the officers involved are found guilty in a court of law.
