‘Letters’: Online scams in Fiji

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I am writing to express my concern about the recent rise in online scams.

As an avid reader, I am shocked by the increasing number of scam victims, particularly as these scams are being perpetrated by locals. I have learned that these scams are primarily conducted through M-PAiSA and fake online websites.

These scams violate individuals’ human rights, causing both mental and emotional trauma. Victims often feel worthless, leading to depression and even thoughts of suicide.

Society tends to look down on victims, further damaging their self-esteem and morale.

As the saying goes: “There is a solution to every problem,” and this issue can also be resolved if people start working together.

It can be addressed by individuals being more cautious, staying informed through news updates, and refraining from sharing personal details online.

Conducting quick background checks on websites and considering the opinions of others when receiving anonymous calls or messages asking for money or personal details, such as bank information, are also important steps.

I sincerely hope you will address the issue of online scams in your next edition.
