As a student of The University of the South Pacific studying human rights, one of its assignments is to write a letter that expresses my concern on this human rights issue in Tonga.
As a citizen of Tonga, the alarming rate of teenage pregnancies in Tonga has raised serious concerns about the health and wellbeing of young girls.
This alarming trend not only jeopardises the health and future of our young girls, but also poses significant socio-economic challenges for our community. Many teenagers lack adequate access to sexual education and reproductive health services, leading to uninformed decisions and unintended pregnancies.
There is an urgent need for comprehensive sex education programmes in schools and community outreach initiatives that provide accurate information and support. Additionally, fostering open communication between parents and teenagers about sexual health is crucial.
By addressing this issue collectively, we can ensure a brighter and healthier future for our youth. It is imperative that the Government, NGOs, and community leaders collaborate to implement effective strategies to combat teenage pregnancies and support affected teenagers.
