Fiji is transitioning into the dry or cold season already an increased number of cases at health centres of flu and cold infections are evident.
One needs to only look at the attendance at the workplace or in schools to realise it.
These respiratory illnesses, though common, can be particularly disruptive and even dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Understanding how to protect ourselves and mitigate the spread is crucial to maintaining public health.
The influenza virus and the common cold are highly contagious.
They spread primarily through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
Medical reports tell us that the dry season can ‘exacerbate the situation as the cooler, drier air can dry out the mucous membranes in the nose, making it easier for viruses to take hold’. Furthermore, people tend to gather indoors during cooler weather, increasing the likelihood of close contact and, consequently, virus transmission.
To protect yourself and others, several simple measures can be implemented:
Hand hygiene:
Regular and thorough handwashing with soap and water is a simple yet highly effective way to prevent the spread of germs. In situations where soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be a good alternative.
Respiratory etiquette: Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of droplets.
Dispose of tissues immediately and wash your hands afterward.
Avoiding close contact:
If you are feeling unwell, it is crucial to stay home and avoid close contact with others.
Similarly, try to avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle: A strong immune system can help fend off infections.
Eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, staying hydrated, and ensuring adequate sleep are all important aspects of maintaining overall health.
Cleaning and disinfecting:
Regularly clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices.
This can help reduce the likelihood of virus transmission from contaminated surfaces.
Public awareness and adherence to these preventive measures can significantly reduce the impact of flu and cold season.
As a community, staying informed, vigilant, and proactive will help protect not only individual health but also the collective wellbeing of Fijians as we navigate through the colder months.
By working together, we can ensure a healthier, safer environment for everyone..
