Recently, throughout the major centres in the country including communities and universities, there was great emphasis placed on recycling.
The commencement of the recycling projects was launched with great excitement, and the message on the subject delivered by the guest speakers.
I believe that 80 per cent of the time and resources was directed at the start of the concept, and we continue to see the abuse of the coloured bins.
The perception of most people is that whatever the colour of the bins, it is still a rubbish bin.
The dissemination of the message greatly failed its targets and were delivered in a manner that made no impact at all.
The refuse segregation idea and the benefits did not filter down to the people.
Probably a better option to make the concept work is to channel the 80 percentage of the resources in education curriculum of all primary schools and practically engage the students and monitor regularly to determine the success.
Garbage separation is a small but significant action that holds immense potential for positive environmental change.
By reducing landfill waste, lowering green-house gas emissions, preserving natural resources, and reaping numerous benefits.
We must be more vigorous in the education campaign of the recycling model at the workplaces with a measuring system to minimise waste ending up in the landfill, and probably implement a staff incentive reward system.
