Following the 2022 General Election, Fiji celebrated the swearing-in of a new government.
A palpable sense of relief swept through the population, marking an end to the 16-year reign of a regime perceived as dictatorial.
The people had a lot of expectations from the new government.
However, over a year later, we discover the government entangled in one controversy after another.
We have a Prime Minister who is facing difficulties in maintaining discipline among his members.
A minister was demoted to the backbench due to insubordination.
Two ministers find themselves entangled in a scandal involving sex and drugs, yet they behave as though no such incident has occurred.
We have ministers who are under investigation by the police, FICAC, and the elections office.
There are allegations that numerous appointments in top positions are being made based on political affiliations rather than merit.
The country is plagued with a never seen drug problem.
These are just a few examples of the controversies in which the government currently finds itself embroiled.
It’s time to ask some hard questions.
Why is this happening? Is what’s happening morally justifiable?
Is the country heading in the right direction?
The PM has to pause and think carefully about how he is governing the country.
He may have to make difficult decisions that might not be well-liked and could face strong opposition. Being the PM, he has to remain firm.
The future of our country is in jeopardy.
Most people don’t want things to continue as they are.
More importantly, nobody wants to return to the oppressive times the country has recently emerged from.
Mr Prime Minister, please do what is right.
Show your capability; take action now if you do not want to regret later.
