LETTERS: Health System

Dr Turagava needs to understand that building a new hospital isn’t going to solve the problem.

What is needed is a sector wide approach (SWAP) to health care, with particular attention being paid to human resources, via the three key elements of administrators, medical staff (doctors and nurses) and patients.

Fiji lost 25 per cent of their nurses last year, so no nurses means long delays in surgery, extended waiting lists, backlog of beds due to limited availability, frustrated doctors and so on.

A sector wide approach (SWAP) is an ideal approach for donors like Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, United Kingdom, to pool their resources and fix Fiji’s health system once and for all.
