I have been driving for the past five years and it has come to my attention that some drivers today are getting very reckless on our roads.
This issue is rising at an alarming rate despite relevant authorities doing its level best to control this issue. Yet, drivers still disregard the safety of other commuters.
I personally have encountered several close call incidences where some drivers deliberately choose to disobey road markings and tend to drive their vehicles on the opposite lane.
Taxi drivers here are becoming a nuisance as they will deliberately break traffic rules, such as stopping in the middle of the highway to pick up a job despite being fully aware of the risks or making illegal u-turns on double lanes.
The usual defence they use with relevant authorities is that there were no signs available for them that dictates they cannot perform the manoeuver they performed.
A good example is in Nausori near the old market exit point, where the double lines are partially faded off; there is also a sign allocated for the drivers not to make a right turn, which will allow them to make their way towards Syria Park.
Yet, the drivers continue to disobey the sign provided.
I also humbly request the relevant authorities to make checks around the country and keep the road markings up to date.
This will allow relevant authorities to perform its duties efficiently without the repeated offenders getting a possible defence and taking advantage of the unnecessary loopholes left behind by the roads not being marked properly.
Also, a word for the motorists, there is no need to disobey the road rules.
The rules have been implemented for your safety.
Please do not use lame excuses as cover up because you are fully aware of your actions.
Always remember your loved ones are at home waiting for your arrival.
Do not risk lives, but save lives.
Please, be considerate.
