I would like to thank the minister for reviewing the energy generation legislation.
Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) does not deserve the monopoly and other protection it enjoys because it has not used this advance to grow greener.
EFL has gone backwards. Green energy used to be approximately 70 per cent to 80 per cent.
Now, it’s only 40 per cent approximately.
We need to allow other green energy providers to compete and help the country reduce greenhouse gasses, save money on imports and create jobs.
In addition, home solar systems should be encouraged and supported as EFL has been ineffective in reducing dependence on dirty energy due to limited funding.
Here, we have homeowners willing to invest.
But EFL is a stumbling block.
Homeowners need EFL connectivity and a fair price for excess energy generated sold to them.
This needs to be legislated together with funding support from climate change organisations.
This would also create many jobs. Once again, thank you minister.
Keep up the good work and God bless.
