Letters: HIV/AIDS Cases

I write this letter with utter frustration and anger about the surging proliferation of HIV/ AIDS cases among youngsters in the country.

It’s maddening to watch the systemic neglect that has allowed this crisis to spiral out of control.

The reason behind this catastrophe is quite glaring: poverty, insufficient healthcare access and the lack of the sex education.

These reasons leave our young individuals vulnerable to the preventative disease.

Furthermore, the sigma or trauma the word HIV/ AIDS carries exacerbates suffering and turns to hinder their access to important and timely given health care.

In today’s society, it is unacceptable that our children bear the brunt of the inattentiveness of those who are in power in the community or country.

Despite the prevention method and treatment, the issue still persists, highlighting the incorrect priorities of society.

We are the ones who make society, thus we should not tolerate this injustice.

The Ministry of Health, policymakers, civil society and local communities must come together to address the root cause of this epidemic.

Anything less would forsake our children’s right to health and dignity.

The future of Fiji deserves better. Let’s turn our anger as motivation and demand answers from those responsible for safeguarding their well-being.
