I gather many people are disappointed with the ‘Straight Talk’ segment featuring Vijay Narayan’s interview with the RFMF Commander, Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai (March 20).
What was wrong was peoples’ expectation that the interview would be like Tim Sebastian’s Hard Talk on BBC (Tim Sebastian is now the moderator of Conflict Zone and New Arab Debates on Deuctsche Welle and carries on in the same brutally honest, and hard hitting way).
That kind of interview, in my view, is too much to expect from a pro-status quo journalist in a third world coup country setting.
A bit like expecting Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to do the right thing by standing down his minister, Lynda Tabuya, for ministerial misconduct on an official overseas engagement.
It’s what makes us third world in more sense than one.
