The news that Coalition Government Minister Lynda Tabuya publicly humiliated and chased out a Fiji Sun journalist from a press conference because she was not happy with an editorial that was critical of her ministerial misconduct on an official overseas engagement is undignified.
But it means the Fiji Sun editorial did what it’s meant to do.
And, the paper’s publisher Rosi Doviverata spelt that out quite succinctly when she said: “We will continue to do our jobs of asking questions and holding power to account.” (FS 9/3/24).
A free press will be failing in its duty as a public watchdog to ensure good governance if it did not do that.
Kudos to the Fiji Sun for its bold journalism! Tabuya’s reaction to the journalists reminds me of Trump’s disgraceful treatment of the media during his term in office.
It has all the hallmarks of arrogance of power.
