I am all for beautifying our country, especially our roads for locals and tourists alike.
But I believe that we should be sensible about it as well.
My point is that while we are trying to come up with ways to make use of the space in the road partitions, islands, and roundabouts, we should have the safety at the back of our minds as well.
Safety for pedestrians, vehicles and their passengers, as well as our animals.
I see how beautiful it can be to have flowers on the road to make our journey easy on the eye as well but having those overgrown plants in the middle of the road can pose great danger.
In the past few years, we have witnessed numerous accidents occur, which have taken out the metal railings, which divide the opposing lanes, and the cars end up in the wrong lanes.
At least if we only have the metal railing dividers, we can see potential hazards and take cautionary measure to avoid getting into accidents.
But if we have overgrown plants in the middle of the road, we do not have any idea if an accident has occurred or one is about to occur on the other side, and if a car is about to come through the said railing and plants and hit you head on.
And, it is the same dangerous situation when it comes to roundabouts such as the one in Namaka/Votualevu.
None of the exits have a clear view of the oncoming traffic at the roundabout when you are trying to merge into it.
Imagine if those gardening funds went into fixing the actual road? What a sight that will be!
Not everyone drives a 4WD or SUV and lifted toys from we can have a bird’s eye view.
Maybe my perspective will change once I sit in one of those. Till then, this will have to do.
