Seeing reports of Suva’s iconic Colonial-era landmark in the form of the Defence Club being engulfed by fire is an extremely sad and unfortunate event.
Such timber structures from our colonial past must be properly preserved.
Admittedly, it will come at some cost.
Effective smoke detectors, including fire alarms and sprinkler systems, are definite prerequisites.
The other similar Suva property is the Fiji Club.
Both of these clubs hold very special historical values.
They must be preserved, in my view.
Special arrangements can be made.
There are generous people around.
