The Drua’s warm up game on Saturday against the Brumbies was great.
It showed how the Drua’s game has improved leaps and bounds in just its third year in Super Rugby.
At the end of the Super Rugby season last year the majority of the Flying Fijians 15s team for the Rugby World Cup, were made up of the Drua squad and rightly so. They were the fittest in the team.
And it was unfortunate that the run on team at every World Cup game was not a Drua 15. This could have worked for then coach, Raiwalui and running in Fiji’s overseas based players for 35 to 40 minutes in the second half of every game.
This could have prevented injuries to Radradra, Tuisova and others towards the end of the World Cup.
The lost opportunities could have seen the Flying Fijians reach the finals even.
I was reminded by a workmate of a quote by the former English Prime Minister – Sir Winston Churchill who said, “a pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty”.
This quote epitomises the coaching mindset of Raiwalui and current Drua coach, Mick Byrne.
The former a pessimist and the latter an optimist.
Just see how far the Drua has improved in just two plus years!
If the trial game on Saturday was anything to go by, then the Fijian Drua will be a force to reckon with come Super Rugby proper. Soko Drua soko (Sail on Drua. Sail on!)!
