Letters: Teachers, please

Don’t keep the slow ones back, Keep them with their peers.

Don’t repeat the big mistake of teaching at only one level, a level far ahead of some and far below the very bright.

The slower ones are left behind, and the faster ones are blocked from going higher. So, challenge them.

Learn to teach at multi-levels; spend more time with the slowest; and let the fastest help you.

ABOVE ALL

Teach children, not the syllabus.

The slow learner will remain slow, but will enjoy learning at her level, and won’t be bored and misbehave, and waste the teacher’s time.

If you make him/her repeat, you will have 12-year-olds in Year Three, labelled repeaters and failures.

Too much competition discourages the rest (some wiser schools don’t give prizes).

All have done their best, perhaps without any help. So, praise effort, not success, and students will truly succeed and not give up or drop out.
